Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the option to question specific rulings made by the official, following the protocol currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
