Pat Cummins has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
The Australian chair of selectors George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming England-Australia contest.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about the prospects of being involved.
"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the Ashes.
He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
