Right-leaning responses to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Administration Justifies Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the redactions with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a six-page memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While the former president's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“People are raging and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to comply with both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—from a DOJ run by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men depicted in pictures have their faces blacked out.
But some do not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“The release is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they will try and hide permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement concluded.
Overall Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for transparency that came before the congressional vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. Earlier this year, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy folders of materials that included no new information.
