The US Justice Department have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
